Beginning with the 2026 Del Mar summer meeting, the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (DMTC) will recognize champions in two Owner Standings categories.
The traditional Owner Standings, based on wins credited to each Equibase stable name, will continue to be published by Del Mar throughout the meet.
In addition, beginning this summer, similar to the New York Racing Association, we will also publish a separate Owner Standings based on wins credited to the designated managing co-owner (the W-9 responsible co-owner as of July 17, 2026) associated with each entry. As a result, victories earned by horses racing in co-ownership arrangements will also be credited to the designated managing co-owner for purposes of those standings.
Like NYRA, we believe this methodology better reflects the realities of modern Thoroughbred ownership. During the 2025 Del Mar summer meeting, approximately 70% of all owners raced under multiple stable names.
Both the traditional Equibase stable-name leader and the managing co-owner leader will be recognized at the conclusion of the meet.
One of TOC’s goals is to celebrate Thoroughbred ownership and recognize the individuals and co-ownerships that make California racing possible. Whether you own one horse or 50, independently or in a co-ownership, every owner contributes to the success and vitality of our sport. As ownership structures continue to evolve, the additional standings provide another way to recognize owners while preserving the traditional Equibase stable-name standings that have long been part of the sport.
The new standings will be conducted on a trial basis during the 2026 Del Mar summer meeting. At the conclusion of the meet, TOC and DMTC will evaluate the results and consider feedback from owners before determining whether they should continue in future years.
We encourage all members to follow both sets of standings throughout the meet and share their thoughts. Your feedback will be an important part of the evaluation process. Thank you for your continued support of California racing, and best of luck this summer at Del Mar.
