I was raised on a farm near Lemoore California where the main crops were cotton, alfalfa, corn, cattle and pigs. Growing up in agriculture taught me many lessons, one of which was that I wasn’t cut out to be a farmer. I went to school at USC where I majored in English Literature with a minor in thoroughbred handicapping. I made at least weekly trips to Santa Anita and Hollywood Park where, between races, I studied for school. (I had already studied the Form the night before). Often, my mailman would knock on my door handing me an envelope with money and listed bets for he and his co-workers. Looking back, the two most important authors I studied in college were Shakespeare and Beyer.
Law school at USC, beginning a law practice, marrying my wife Debbie and raising three girls slowed down my racetrack activities for a few year. In 1991, I relocated from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo and still maintain a practice there focused primarily on land use, real estate and mediation. I’m also a partner in a San Francisco firm specializing in underground water contamination.
I started in racing by buying a very small interest in a filly who won her first race-which turned out to be her only win. I later decided I’d rather make my own mistakes and, along with a friend, purchased a Cal Bred filly. We race as SLO Racing Stable and now own three broodmares. We’ve been fortunate to win a couple of Cal Bred stakes over the year with Bella Viaggia in the Cal Cup Distaff and Neveradoubt in the Snow Chief.
I am committed to the Cal Bred program and have served on the CTBA Board for the past few years. There are a lot of challenges and a lot of opportunities for racing in California. It is an honor to be able to work toward meeting those challenges and seizing those opportunities.
