Arcadia, Calif. – New racehorse owner Dylan Eplin has been selected by Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) as the recipient of the 2024 Rookie of the Year Award. The annual award honors a new owner who exhibits commitment and support to the Thoroughbred racing industry. Eplin had his first start in June at the Alameda County Fair with Remember Sue, who went on to win there in her fourth start. In 2024, she made a total of five starts and earned $12,750.
Eplin acquired Remember Sue as a yearling and named her for his late grandmother. He then lost her to a claim but subsequently claimed her back. Eplin recalled his very first win with her, saying “I was unable to be there because I was driving to a wedding. But I was watching online during the race and screaming!”
His love of racing began when he was a child. His father, Danny, is also involved as an owner and took Dylan to watch training and racing when he was young.
“Racing is special to me because my entire family is involved,” said Eplin. “I have a support team: my mom and dad, two brothers, and a sister.”
The Eplins, who have a ranch in Livermore, make sure their runners are cared for during and after their racing careers. Remember Sue has been retired from racing and sent to Kentucky to be bred to Flameaway at Darby Dan Farm. She will return to have her foal in California.
“If they are not claimed from us or bred, we will work to make sure they get a good home when they are retired,” he said.
Eplin will be honored at this year’s annual meeting on August 16 in Del Mar.
