Arcadia, Calif. – The Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) has announced the winners of its 2023 statistical awards for leading California owners. For the third consecutive year, Reddam Racing was leading owner in total purse earnings, and also topped the standings for most California starts; Taboada Racing Stables LLC led all owners by number of California wins; and leading owner honor for most California stakes wins was shared in a three-way tie by Nick Alexander, Pegram, Watson and Weitman, and Michael Petersen.
Reddam Racing runners earned a total of $2,431,004 in California last year, with 30 wins from 216 starts. Their top runners included Slow Down Andy, winner of the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes; Eddie’s New Dream, winner of the Solana Beach and Fran’s Valentine stakes; and Awake at Midnyte, second in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes and Osunitas Stakes.
Taboada Racing had 36 wins from 178 California starts, for total earnings of $688,274. Their top runners included Ecologist, Fried Asparagus, Lessons of Autism, Night Proof, and Bea Mischief.
Nick Alexander, the partnership of Michael Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, and Michael Petersen each had an impressive seven stakes wins in 2023.
Alexander’s top runners included Rose Maddox, winner of the California Distaff Handicap, Golden Poppy Stakes, and Moscow Burning Stakes; Alice Marble, winner of the Camilla Urso, Irish O’Brien, and Spring Fever stakes; Carole Lombard, winner of the Campanile Stakes; Lovesick Blues, Carmen Miranda, and Tom Horn.
Pegram, Watson and Weitman’s top runners included Grade 1 winners Defunded (Hollywood Gold Cup) and Speed Boat Beach (Malibu Stakes); Havnameltdown, winner of the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes; Midnight Memories, winner of the Grade 3 Bayakoa Stakes; Tahoe Sunrise, Fast and Shiny, and Wine Me Up.
Petersen’s top runners included multiple Graded stakes winners Adare Manor (Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch, Grade 2 Santa Maria, Santa Margarita, and Zenyatta stakes) and Faiza (Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks, Grade 3 Las Virgenes and Santa Ysabel stakes).
